12-Metre Yacht Club

12-METRE YACHT CLUB

Over the past 100 years there have been 360 yachts built to the international rule for twelve metre. From 1958 to 1983 the twelve-metre established itself as the America’s Cup yacht and became an icon of yacht racing in Newport and Rhode Island. The proposed location for the 12-Metre Club is on Touro Street on Newport’s Washington Square. It is a fine example of Federal Style Architecture originally constructed in 1790, comprised of post and beam timbers and sheathed with narrow clapboard siding. The front entryway is elegantly detailed and there is an abundance of 12/12 lite windows. The organization of the building allows the 12-Metre Club to function informally as an everyday office and public museum, as well as formally for private functions. The design and details draw their inspiration from vintage yacht interiors. It incorporates mahogany-paneled walls, scale models of past and current 12-Metres, and glass “boat lockers”, each displaying memorabilia of the yachts and etched with the yacht name and sail number. The club will also house a library, bar and catering facility.
